Namkyung Heo
In the mid-8th century, the notable monk Chungdam, during the reign of King Gyungduk of Silla,
was recognized for using a pine tea set beneath a cherry tree.
This indicates that outdoor tea preparation tools, such as the chasun and chasi, were available during the Silla period.
We are excited to introduce exclusive, high-quality tea tools crafted by Heo Nam-kyung, the only master in Korea,
over the past 45 years. These tools are available exclusively at Dabang.
Bamboo used in his products is primarily sourced from Damyang in Jeolla Province and consists of solid bamboo that is at least two years old. The quality of the bamboo directly affects its longevity.
Damyang's bamboo is renowned for its optimal climate and soil conditions that favor growth, as well as its rich historical background. With an average annual temperature between 12-14°C and over 1,000 mm of rainfall, combined with excellent drainage on mountain slopes, the area provides ideal conditions for bamboo to thrive. Additionally, the region boasts a long history of bamboo craftsmanship, which was even presented to the king in the past.
For proper foaming, it is crucial that the area about 2 cm from the rounded end is soft. This softness is achieved through the craftsman's 45 years of experience and expertise in knife skills.
Chasun is particularly sensitive to moisture, so it is important to first test it in plain water and then allow it to dry before use.
Master Heo's chasun has been honored as a work of art and showcased at the National Museum of Modern
and Contemporary Art in Korea.
